A Historical Masterpiece Reinterpreted​

Originating from the Yuan Dynasty, “Bathing Horses” by Zhao Mengfu is a pivotal piece in Chinese art history. The painting emerged during a transformative era in Chinese art. The art of the Tang and Song dynasties was characterized by a strict adherence to artistic rules and a deep connection to literary themes, creating works rich in refined elegance. However, starting from the Yuan Dynasty, there was a significant shift towards integrating calligraphic techniques into paintings, emphasizing free – flowing expressiveness, as well as a new focus on the unique qualities of rice paper and water – based inks. “Bathing Horses” perfectly captures this artistic evolution, bridging the gap between the old and new styles.​

Moreover, this work was a commissioned piece by Emperor Wuzong of Yuan. To create it, Zhao Mengfu spent days observing the imperial stables, carefully studying the horses’ every movement and the grooms’ daily routines. He also made a great effort to understand Emperor Wuzong’s artistic vision. His dedication and talent ultimately resulted in this iconic painting, which combines realism with the emerging artistic trends of the time.​
